Caribou Hunt – Paxson, Alaska

November 20, 2016

I spent this weekend near Paxson, AK hunting the Nelchina Caribou Herd with Kyle. He was proxy hunting for a lady who is no longer physically able to hunt. Today he was able to tag this cow for her!

It stayed about -6 degrees throughout the weekend, but the skies stayed fairly clear.

The first day we saw one herd across Paxson Lake and attempted to get closer on foot (we couldn’t get the four wheeler to start). We weren’t able to get close enough before sunset.

We were pretty cold by the end of this day.

On Sunday we were able to spot a few herds and on the third try, he finally made contact with a cow.

Winter Caribou hunting was way different than deer hunting along cornfields in the Midwest.

Maybe next year I will tag one of my own!

This blog is simply a log of my personal experiences. It is not a travel guide, a trail guide, any other sort of a guide, and it is not intended to give information for replication.
